Right now, we’re (my GI and I) experimenting with treatment for small intestine bacterial overgrowth – aka SIBO. I am going to be taking Xifaxan for two weeks, and hopefully the delayed gastric emptying will improve. We’re also going the motility improve.
He decided to just do the treatment instead of testing first because he didn’t like how many I’ve been thru already, and apparently the SIBO test isn’t very accurate. Xifaxan isn’t supposed to be absorbed into your system much at all, so there really isn’t supposed to be too many side effects, so I decided to just for it. I figure my daily issues are so miserable, I’d rather just try it and hope it’ll help.
So far, I haven’t been too happy: gassy and lots of bathroom trips. My fatigue is also a little wacky, but my period is also poorly timed again. However, my stomach had been marginally better. Hopefully that means it’s been helping.
I’m behind here but I treated mine through a naturopath and that really made a big difference. Not just in my health, but in my wallet, as it isn’t covered by insurance…but it did work.

The Xifaxan ended up being free 🙂 (my doctor had a secondary card for me so it covered the rest of what my insurance wouldn’t). Thank goodness, because out of pocket that medication is ridiculous.
I have a follow up in a few more weeks. After the medication kills off the bacteria, I’m betting I need to wait for the balance in the rest of my digestive tract to return. However, I am already feeling a little bit better. 🙂 So here’s hoping it worked!

Regardless of the treatment, I always felt worse before I felt better. They call that “die off.”

I figured. I think that’s probably why my doc had me stay in the probiotic, to minimize the magnitude of the crappy feeling.

I thought naturopaths were usually pretty expensive because they’re not covered by insurance at all? Or did I misunderstand your sentence?

That is correct but I paid with my HSA, so at least it was pretax. 😉

OH reread it again and now I get it! 😛 at least you were able to use your HSA! I’m glad it worked for you though, that usually makes the higher price tag worth it.
